Julian Knowles

Professor Julian Knowles is a Professor of Music in the Faculty of Arts and Macquarie University. He is a composer, performer and record producer, with an extensive background in the Australian and UK music scenes. His research interests lie in the intersection of music, media and new technologies.

Julian has achieved international recognition for his compositions, recordings and performances across a range of genres and fields. His work has been presented at events such as the Melbourne International Film Festival, VIVID Sydney and in venues such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Sydney Opera House and Experimental Intermedia in New York City.

Julian has over 20 years governance experience in the not-for-profit arts sector. He was Chair of Q Music – the industry peak body for music in QLD – for a 6 year period, working on the development of BIGSOUND music summit towards a flagship national music industry event.

Since 2013 he has been Chair of Music NSW – the industry peak body for music in NSW. He was appointed by the Minister for the Arts to a 4 year term as a member of the Music Board of the Australia Council for the Arts and has since been a frequent peer assessor and advisor. In his 25 year academic career, Julian has held a range of senior roles. He has been a Head of School at three Australian universities and most recently Associate Dean International in the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University.
