Ashok Vardhan Shetty

K. Ashok Vardhan Shetty, who hails from Karnataka, was formerly a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) of Tamil Nadu Cadre of the 1983 batch. He had a brilliant academic career throughout and stood 4 th in the State in the S.S.L.C public examination of 1973. He has a B.E (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering and B.L. He dropped out of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore after the 1 st year to join the IAS in 1983 but went on to complete his MBA from the University of Birmingham, U.K in 2002 securing ‘Distinction’ and first rank. As a student, Mr. Shetty won more than 30 prizes in District and State level Quiz and Debating competitions, and was awarded the ‘Outstanding Quiz Competitor Award’ in 1979 by UNI-YMCA. He also won the highest number of prizes in sports and extra-curricular activities (13 prizes) during his training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (for IAS Officers), Mussoorie (1983-85).

Starting out as Sub Collector, Hosur in 1985, Mr.Shetty held a number of key assignments including Registrar of the University of Madras between 1989 and 1991 (the first IAS officer to hold the post since 1857 and the youngest Registrar ever at the age of 31); Deputy Commissioner (Commercial Taxes), Madras North (1991-93); District Collector, Villupuram (1993-94); Director of Rural Development (1996-98); Managing Director, TASMAC (1998-99); Secretary, Chief Minister’s Secretariat (1999-2001); Managing Director, SAGOSERVE, Salem (2003-06); Principal Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department (2006-10); Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply (2010-11), among others. After taking voluntary retirement from the IAS, he also served as the Vice Chancellor of the Indian Maritime University, Chennai, a Central University under the Union Ministry of Shipping, between 2014 and 2017.
