Ajai Verma
Ajai Verma is an Australian-Indian senior health executive, born in Australia to Indian migrants and raised in Melbourne. He began his career as a General Practitioner and has since moved into health system leadership, with a focus on improving outcomes at scale through innovation, equity and cross-sector collaboration. He is currently Chief Medical Officer of a $1.3 billion tertiary hospital network with over 1,000 beds, serving a diverse population of over 500,000 people.
Ajai’s work sits at the intersection of clinical care, research and system transformation. He leads portfolios spanning clinical trials, ethics and population health, and has supported the development of stronger links between hospitals, academia and government. His recent focus includes the responsible use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to improve access and sustainability in healthcare.
He also serves as a non-executive director across research, private and public sector organisations, supporting collaboration between government, academia and industry to strengthen local capability, social and economic resilience. Ajai holds an affiliate academic appointment as a Professor, multiple professional fellowships and a Senior Executive MBA with work and study experience spanning four continents.
Ajai is passionate about social impact and cross-cultural exchange, and is committed to strengthening Australia–India collaboration through innovation, leadership and shared knowledge.
He lives with his wife and two children, and enjoys watching and playing sports, though he can’t decide whether he enjoys cricket or AFL football more.
